Simpson, Clary Recognized for NFPA-72 Efforts

At the 2018 TMA Annual Meeting in Palm Beach, Vector Security’s Rick Simpson, left, and Bay Alarm’s Shane Clary, right, pictured with TMA President Ivan Spector, were honored with TMA President’s Awards for their efforts on the NFPA-72 initiative earlier this year. “Shane and Rick did an incredible job on the Industry’s behalf,” said Spector. “There is no one who knows the codes like Rick, and no one who can give the kind of presentation [to the NFPA Standards Council] that Shane did. I was truly honored and humbled to have shared the moments with them both.”

Kimberlite’s Rao-Russell to Lead TMA’s PSLC Subcommittee on Law Enforcement

Joey Rao-Russell, President and CEO of Kimberlite Corporation, is the new chair of the Law Enforcement subcommittee of TMA’s Public Safety Liaison Committee. The PSLC advises the TMA Board on strategies and activities to be used in working with public sector organizations, such as the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriffs’ AssociationJoey Rao-Russell Headshot, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials and others, in order to advance the views and goals of the monitoring industry. It is chaired by Graham Westphal, Co-President of Bay Alarm Company.

“I hope to help TMA and our members increase awareness and presence in their state and local law enforcement associations,” said Rao-Russell. “I would like to increase cooperation and collaboration to help law enforcement better protect our communities and clients. In particular, I would like to see us increase participation in California, Florida, and Texas first, due to their positioning as influential state associations.”

Joey Rao-Russell has worked in the Security industry for 16 years, working in all aspects of the business including operations and sales up to her current position as the President & CEO of Kimberlite Corporation, the world’s largest independent Sonitrol franchisee. Based in Fresno, California,  Kimberlite has consistently been ranked in the SDM Top 100 companies and integrators for the last 15 years and operates an award-winning central station specializing in audio- and video-verified security solutions. She currently serves as Past President of the Sonitrol National Dealers Association and Vice President of PPVAR.

“We are honored to have the the senior executive from Kimberlite take this role,” said Graham Westphal. “It is our great gain that Joey is willing to give her time to TMA for the betterment of the industry.”

Contra Costa Co. (CA) Office of the Sheriff & Bay Alarm Win National Award

The Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) is proud to team with the Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA) and the National Sheriffs’ Association to honor Sheriff David O. Livingston of the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff and Bay Alarm with the inaugural Sheriff/Private Security Partnership Award.

This new award recognizes a strong partnership between a Sheriff’s Office and a local private sector security partner. SIAC Executive Director Stan Martin and Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn on behalf of the National Sheriffs’ Association presented the award to Sheriff Livingston and Matt Westphal from Bay Alarm.

“Sheriff Livingston and his department have a tremendous relationship with Bay Alarm,” said SIAC’s Martin. “This public/private sector bond has proven extremely beneficial in Contra Costa County and the San Francisco Bay Area.”

As part of this great relationship, Bay Alarm provides the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Law Enforcement Training Center with scholarship funding to assist new law enforcement recruits who are putting themselves through the basic academy.

“For the past 12 years, Bay Alarm has been and continues to be a proud partner of the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office,” said Matt Westphal, Co-President of Bay Alarm. “Our scholarship program helps prospective law enforcement officers get the training they need to start a career of keeping the public safe.”

“We are honored to be the first recipients of this award,” said Contra Costa Sheriff David O. Livingston. “The Office of the Sheriff has an important and successful partnership with Bay Alarm. Their scholarships, which help fund the next generation of law enforcement officers, are invaluable.”

Bay Alarm’s Westphal Warns of Coming Penalties for Alarm Industry E-Waste

Security companies should start preparing to upgrade their systems for e-waste disposal or risk action by state Attorneys General. Graham Westphal, Co-President of Bay Alarm and secretary of the CSAA Board of Directors, brought this matter to the attention of CSAA members present at the General Membership Meeting in Fort Worth on June 9.

Westphal detailed how California’s Attorney General has recently brought action against Comcast, ADT and Bay Alarm for improper disposal of e-waste, and warned that state AGs talk to each other and see this kind of action as a revenue source. “It’s likely similar actions will be coming to a state near you,” he said.

“In California, you now own the electronic waste you remove from a home,” Westphal continued. “They are dumpster-diving to find evidence, and assigning impact fees.” Most of the hazardous waste in the Comcast case was electronic equipment such as remote controls, splitters, routers, modems, amplifiers, and power adapters.

Westphal advises companies to immediately revisit their e-waste recycling plan to be sure it is up-to-date and congruent with state laws — and that the plan is being followed.

Public Sector Liaison Committee Aims to Increase Engagement

CSAA’s Public Sector Liaison Committee (PSLC) “manages strategy for dealing with public sector/first responders, law enforcement, police, sheriffs, fire community, fire chiefs, and state fire marshals,” said Graham Westphal, Co-President of Bay Alarm Company and chair of the committee. “It’s important that we keep these responders informed of our technology and tools that benefit them. The committee also engages with the NRTLs, and coordinates with SIAC to complement its activities.”

The committee is in the process of launching several new engagement initiatives. “We are very fortunate that recently Shane Clary has volunteered to chair the subcommittee in fire matters and that Jon Sargent has assumed a similar role for burglary,” said Westphal.

Clary, Ph.D., Vice President, Codes and Standards Compliance at Bay Alarm Company, has been in the alarm industry since 1974, with Bay Alarm Company since 1984, and a member of NFPA 72 since 1993.  He is a past president of the California Automatic Fire Alarm Association, a past chairman of the Automatic Fire Alarm Association and is currently the Co-Chair of the AFAA Codes and Standards Committee.

 

Jon Sargent, Corporate Industry Relations/Government Affairs Jon Sargent headshotManager at Tyco Integrated Security, has 43 years in the security industry. A Past President of the California Alarm Association, he is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriff’s Association, and the North American False Alarm Reduction Association, among others. He is currently the Secretary of ESA and the Industry/Law Enforcement Liaison for SIAC.
