ESX 2019 – A Retrospective

Passionate security professionals from across the security industry began arriving in Indianapolis for the 2019 ESX Sunday, June 6. TMA kicked off the event with a bang – hosting its Board of Directors and committee meetings, as well as its General Membership Meeting. During the Opening Celebration on Monday, June 7, TMA had the honor of presenting its Excellence Awards and Marvel Technology Award. Education programs began and the exhibit floor opened on Wednesday, June 8. This year’s keynote speakers Dr. Rigsby and Kevin Brown inspired attendees beyond measure. Other Center Stage panelists offered thought-provoking presentations on leading-edge technology and active shooter response. The Indy Experience and the SDM 100 Gala rounded out the week’s events.

TMA Meetings

TMA hosted it’s Board Meeting, committee meetings, and General Membership Meeting at ESX. We value the time and support that our volunteers dedicate to TMA throughout the year. Their unique knowledge, experience, and industry insights enable TMA to stay on the forefront of the monitoring center best practices and technology trends.

TMA Awards

On Monday, June 7, TMA presented its Excellence and Marvel Technology Awards at the 2019 ESX Opening Celebration.

Excellence Awards

Each year, TMA presents four Excellence Awards recognizing a Monitoring Center and three key staff leaders who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to their profession and those they serve. SDM Magazine co-sponsors these awards. TMA President Ivan Spector and SDM Magazine Editor Laura Stepanek had the honor of presenting this year’s Excellence Awards.

The 2019 Support Person of the Year Award is presented to Ben Perry, Universal Atlantic Systems.

The 2019 Operator of the Year Award to Charles White, Affiliated Monitoring, Inc.

The 2019 Manager of the Year Award was awarded to Sarah Murphy, Sonitrol of Fresno. Accepting the award on her behalf is Joey Rao-Russell, president, Sonitrol of Fresno.

The 2019 Monitoring Center of the Year Award was presented to Guardian Protection.

The Marvel Award

TMA presents The Marvel Technology Award to  recognize professional monitoring centers for the creation and/or implementation of cutting-edge technology. Each year, the award will be presented to one overall winner for the “best adoption of new technology to advance your business.” Security Sales and Integration Magazine co-sponsors this awards. TMA President Ivan Spector and SSI Magazine Editor Scott Goldfine had the honor of presenting this year’s Marvel Technology Award to CPI Security Systems.

The Public Sector Award

TMA President Ivan Spector and Executive Director Celia T. Besore had the distinct privilege to present this year’s Public Sector Award to New York State Lieutenant Rachael VanDeusen. She is credited with leading the efforts to expand access to TMA’s ASAP-to-PSAP1 Service via the New York eJustice Information System (CIIS). She is the fifth recipient of the award, which was established in 2015 to recognize a public sector individual’s contribution to the alarm industry and its subscribers.

TMA Education

TMA extends its gratitude to OneTel for their generous sponsorship of the Monitoring Track and to our wonderful speakers. Interest among attendees was high, as sessions were full throughout the three days of educational programming.

Keynotes & General Sessions

Dr. Rick Rigsby mesmerized the ESX audience! His bold energy and often raw emotions inspired and empowered all.

Attendees were moved to laugh, to cry, and to wrap a cape across their shoulders by keynote speaker Kevin Brown. He reminded all how easy it is to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

ESX Chairman George DeMarco led a panel discussion on some of the latest technology trends. Nate Williams, Entrepreneur-in-Residence, Kleiner Perkins and Founder, Union labs joined Alex Pachikox, founder, Sunflower Labs, highlighted opportunities in IoT, cyber security, aging in place, and autonomous vehicles.

Thursday’s closing keynotes tackled some of the increasing threats to workplaces, schools, and other public venues. Ed Fries, Director of Safety & Security, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Mindy Pretzman, US Secret Service, provided some first-hand insights into how to best protect customers and communities today.
